Surgical Orthodontics

Surgical orthodontics, or orthognathic surgery, aims to rectify jaw misalignment for enhanced chewing, speaking, breathing, and overall facial aesthetics.

The root cause

The root cause of bite issues often lies in the positioning and growth of the jawbones rather than the teeth themselves. Addressing such cases requires a coordinated effort involving both an Orthodontist and either an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon or Plastic Surgeon.

Candidates for this treatment typically include adults dealing with underbites, crossbites, open bites, and various jaw alignment concerns. Additionally, children with growth anomalies beyond the scope of traditional orthodontic methods may benefit from this approach.

We are uniquely qualified

Dr. Kuper-Smith boasts multi-specialty experience on surgical orthodontic cases and Maxillofacial residency experience. If surgical orthodontics are required we are uniquely qualified to refer you for the right treatment.

The comprehensive process incorporates multiple stages, utilizing both braces and jaw surgery. Braces are typically applied to the teeth a year to a year and a half before the scheduled surgical intervention, remaining in place for six months to a year post-surgery to ensure a stable and aesthetically pleasing outcome.
